My 5 Favorite Kid-Friendly Adventures in The City of Brotherly Love
Philadelphia is rich with history, diversity, food, and fun. If you have little ones, there is always something exciting to see and do with them. This is a list of my 5 FAVORITE family-friendly places to visit with my family:
1. The Philadelphia Zoo
Check out America’s first zoo! There are over 1300 different animals and a ton of exhibits and activities. Our personal favorite is KidZooU, where you can brush goats, feed ducks, and chase chickens. There is even a climbing play area for children over 5. I highly recommend getting the membership, as it includes parking, discounts on food and gift shop items, and guest passes for friends and family. It pays for itself in two visits!
Another great thing about a zoo membership is the Reciprocity Program If you plan to travel with your littles, don’t forget to pack your zoo or aquarium membership. It may be worth 50-100% off admission to other zoos across the country!
2. Please Touch Museum
Another of America’s firsts, the Please Touch Museum is a world of hands-on and creative play. It is truly a “must-see” if you have children under 8. Splash in the indoor duck pond, run through the Alice in Wonderland maze, shoot rockets, and ride the historic carousel. There are plenty of PTM staple exhibits, but they also keep it fresh by incorporating a variety of seasonal activities and events. There is always something going on at the Please Touch Museum!
This is another attraction that is worth the membership. Parking and discounts on food and gift shop items are included. Whether you purchase a basic membership or one guest passes included, additional tickets beyond what your membership includes are available at a discounted rate – so bring a friend! Members can also receive discounted admission to more than 200 children’s museum nationwide through the Association of Children’s Museums Reciprocal Network.
3. Linvilla Orchards
I admit that this one is not within the city limits, however it is worth the short drive! Linvilla Orchards is a fantastic destination for year-round outdoor family fun. Enjoy a hay ride, feed some animals, and pick your own seasonal fruits and veggies to enjoy with your family. There is also a farmer’s market where you can pick up some yummy treats to take home. We LOVE that place!
If you’re ever in search for an easy and low-stress outing with the kids, check out IKEA. Here are some quick reasons why you should consider it:
- Family friendly parking lot
- Ikea Family Card – Free and quick to get. Use this for discounts and free food items!
- Smaal land – Their supervised play area. Yes, your kids can play while you shop!
- Cheap and yummy eats for adults and children. – My kids like the meatballs and mashed potatoes!
- Family restroom – Arguably the best designed restroom in existence
- $1 ice cream cones – Don’t think about it. Just do it!
One of the best things about Ikea is that they don’t get upset if your kids climb on the furniture. They actually encourage customers to try out their products, so it isn’t a big deal if your kids decide they want to climb on the display beds or test out the living room funiture.
Ikea also has a fantastic selection of developmentally appropriate toys. (I’ll write about this in a later post.) Let your child spend some time playing with the display toys – I promise the staff will be happy to see them to it! With seriously super cheap prices, you’ll feel little to no guilt about splurging on an item or two for your play room.
5. Spray Parks
Spray parks are a well-known summer time treat in Philadelphia. Next to the Mr. Softee truck, visiting a spray park is one of the top “must do’s” for welcoming the warm weather.
Here are some lists of spray parks around the city:
So there you have it, my 5 favorite things to do with my littles! Have you visited any of these places? Are there other places that you think should have made the list? I want to hear about it. Leave me a comment below!
